Review The Woman in Black (2012)

Director : James Watkins.
Writers : Susan Hill (novel), Jane Goldman (screenplay).
Stars : Daniel Radcliffe, Janet McTeer and Ciaran Hinds.

Review :

Although at first glances, this film stands out for it's fear factor, this film is mostly marked by it's shear bitterness and resentment brought through the character of Jennet Humfrye AKA the Woman in Black.

It would be wrong to say that this film is genre defining, however there is something nice about the simplicity of the storyline which balances not revealing too much detail along with refraining from delving to far into the supernatural.

The eerie setting of Eel Marsh House provides a perfect location as the young solicitor Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) soon discovers how out of his depth his current assignment has thrown him. The accompanying fear brought through the local villagers is only second to the shear lack of hope or promise in this film

Altogether, this is a very good film and a refreshing change from the shallow and boring horror of nowadays that seems to contain complicated story lines that really don't make much sense.

The one weakness of this film is that past the first viewing, this film does become a bit predictable, due to it's rather sudden and yet curious ending.

Credits by Edward Mitchell.
